It\u2019s the thing you often do when you&#8217;re feeling stressed, scared, overwhelmed, emotional or unsure. There is a good reason why we call it a survival mechanism, but that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s the best course of action. Here\u2019s why&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class=\"igaudio\">\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-3511-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/internalgroove.com\/2023dev\/media\/MML\/I&#039;veGotYou.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/internalgroove.com\/2023dev\/media\/MML\/I&#039;veGotYou.mp3\">https:\/\/internalgroove.com\/2023dev\/media\/MML\/I&#039;veGotYou.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Survival is the most fundamental objective of being human.<\/h2>\n<p>We have an innate drive not only to get our basic needs met, but to create all the things that <a href=\"https:\/\/internalgroove.com\/2023dev\/do-you\/\">bring us satisfaction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When we\u2019re kids, we want our parents\u2019 or primary caregiver\u2019s love, their approval, and we need to feel safe.<\/p>\n<p>The term that has been given to a behavior we develop as a means of getting our needs met when we\u2019re young is: <em>survival mechanism<\/em><strong><\/strong>. Because when we\u2019re small, it feels like we literally need it to survive.<\/p>\n<h2>All humans have survival mechanisms.<\/h2>\n<p>And we tend to employ these learned behaviors as we grow into adulthood, because they have worked for us in the past.<\/p>\n<p>You may think this is an absurd assertion. Does any rational adult think they can get a raise by holding their breath until they pass out? Of course not!<\/p>\n<p>However, we humans aren\u2019t inclined to completely dispense with something that\u2019s become a habit and has served us well in the past, even if it\u2019s no longer working.<\/p>\n<h2>Often, we just find new ways to employ the same old tactics.<\/h2>\n<p>But just because we\u2019ve dressed it in a business suit, doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s all that different.<\/p>\n<p>Adult-modified survival mechanisms are insidious, because they look much more civilized. We may even fool ourselves! After all, we\u2019ve been operating with them for as long as we can remember.<\/p>\n<p>Are you interested in trading in the incognito coping strategies you developed as a five or seven year old for <a href=\"https:\/\/internalgroove.com\/2023dev\/a-new-chapter\/\">more effective adult strategies<\/a>? If so&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>Pay attention to where your mind and behavior go when you are:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Stressed<\/li>\n<li>Tired<\/li>\n<li>Overwhelmed<\/li>\n<li>Frustrated<\/li>\n<li>Hungry<\/li>\n<li>Lonely<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are the most likely times when a survival mechanism tends to kick in.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re present enough to recognize what\u2019s happening, remember, <strong>the emotional intelligence of a little one developed this strategy, whatever it is, in order to gain love and acceptance and feel safe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Scolding yourself is only going to make you feel worse.<\/h2>\n<p>Assure your scared inner child that the <a href=\"https:\/\/internalgroove.com\/2023dev\/wise-adult\/\">wise, adult you has got this now<\/a>; they are not alone; that you are going to take care of him\/her; and that everything is going to be okay.<\/p>\n<p>This allows them to now be in charge of what kids are good at &#8212; creativity, fun and play, so don\u2019t leave them out in the cold.<\/p>\n<p>Instead take very good emotional care of them the way you would a much adored child.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is your work situation uncertain or frustrating you?<\/strong> Are you without a job or wisely thinking a current furlough may be just the hidden gift to start exploring work you\u2019re truly meant to do?
