Doing new things can bring up fear and excitement. Test this effective perspective for understanding these emotions, and learn to use them as fuel to propel you forward, toward your goals.
Self management is so important when you embark on a path of doing something new.
Whether you are starting your own business, moving into a new field or you just got a new job, thankfully taking things one step at a time can make the process of going outside your comfort zone a little less daunting.
It’s natural to feel nervous, but it’s also good to feel excited.
And guess what?
Those two emotions feel the same in the body.
It’s important to recognize that.
Don’t attribute all the fluttering emotions to nervousness and get lost in a sea of anxiety.
Acknowledge that some of it is actually excitement, which means you’re doing something you actually WANT to do.
As long as you have more excitement than nervousness, you are absolutely headed in the right direction!
And there are some good practices for making sure you stay on the right side of the equation.
One way to soften some of the anxiety that goes along with venturing into uncharted territory is to take small steps.
A good way to think about it is to imagine stepping stones in someone’s backyard.
Just think of taking one step at a time.
You don’t have to leap all the way from the driveway to the backdoor in one move.
Give yourself permission to take a step at a time.
This allows you to take things slow since your learning and doing new things.
It also allows you to build momentum, and to foster excitement instead of feeding the nervousness.
If you feel yourself starting to become overly nervous, it’s probably because you’re projecting beyond the next small step you need to take.
So take a moment to remind yourself that nervousness and excitement feel the same in the body. Pause, remind yourself to take one step at a time, and focus on the excitement.
