Self Regulation Activities That Free Up Energy

Self Regulation Activities That Free Up Energy

Do you feel overwhelmed and burned out? If your answer is yes, have you considered or heard of self regulation activities? In this audio snippet I’ll tell you the one factor I have found at the root of most overwhelm and burnout syndrome. Addressing it will give you immediate relief.

Self regulation activities are actions that bring a sense of calm confidence into your experience (among other things).

Learning effective self regulation activities can go a long way toward keeping you sane.

Since dysregulation causes angst, it’s a big energy drain on your mind and body.

So, self regulation activities can free up a lot of energy.

Is there anyone on the planet right now who wouldn’t like to have more energy!

Self regulation activities are a key factor of self care.

In fact, effective self regulation can calm the nervous system better than going on vacation or getting a massage.

Imagine these scenarios:

  • You’re on a beautiful sunny beach with a frosty tropical drink in your hand, a perfect breeze a blowin’ and you’re thinking about how disappointed in yourself you are for not packing an extra bathing suit.
  • You’re getting a delicious massage, but you can’t fully melt into it because you keep thinking about the error you made at work last week.

You may have guessed by now that the self regulation activity I want to zoom in on is self-talk.

The way you speak to yourself is the most important facet of self care.

Do you speak to yourself with kindness and compassion when you’re having a bad day?

When you make a mistake?

When something doesn’t go as planned?

What negative things do you hold true about who you are?

For instance, do you consider yourself a procrastinator?

If so, what derogatory statements do you make inside your head about that label you’ve given yourself?

Taking care of yourself includes being conscious of your mental and emotional habits.

And how you speak to yourself is a habit.

Negative, judgmental self-talk, and victim mentality (i.e., negative self-talk about what others have done to you) is where I see clients get very tripped up!

It takes so much energy and bandwidth to manage being attacked from within.

This is domestic abuse of the worst kind because it’s coming from YOU!

It shouldn’t be hard to see how the habit of negative self talk can get in the way of productivity.

It diminishes your capacity to operate efficiently in business and in your personal life.

And it inevitably leads to career burnout.

It’s where I was twenty years ago, so I know the dynamic well. I have learned a lot since then about the starring role I played in my own burnout.

This changes the perspective on what job burnout is really about.

It isn’t something someone does TO you.

It’s really about not managing your own needs.

That means YOU have the power to change simply by making a commitment to speak to yourself with kindness and compassion.

YOU have the power to stop the energy drain of negative self-talk and get yourself on the path to regulated, calm, confidence!
