Empowerment Tools for Overcoming Labels

Have you ever felt confined by the labels you’ve placed on yourself? In this audio clip, I’ll share one of my most effective empowerment tools for breaking free from these labels, allowing you to step into the liberating truth of who you truly are.

As an empowerment coach, I believe in using empowerment tools to create a life and career that allow you to shine as your most authentic self.

Labeling yourself is the opposite of living in your power.

As soon as you give yourself a label, you start to see yourself through that label’s lens. You may overlook qualities and characteristics you possess that don’t fit with the label you have given yourself. This can be limiting to your personal and professional growth.

So, let’s first of all, stop labeling ourselves!

Secondly, I’d like to introduce an empowerment strategy for overcoming any labels you may have given yourself: Five Things I’m Proud Of. I give my clients a daily assignment around this empowerment tool. Don’t worry; it only requires a bit of your attention and focus at the end of each day (or the beginning if you choose to do it in the morning).

Here’s how it works:

Decide when you are going to do the exercise. You can do it as you lie in bed about to fall asleep, while brushing your teeth, or in the morning when you first wake up.

The exercise is simple. You think of five things you are proud of yourself for doing over the course of the day.

These can be tiny things or big things. They can be accomplishments, but ideally, you will go beyond your to-do list.

For instance, maybe you were brave enough to initiate a challenging conversation you were nervous about having. Perhaps you were triggered at work and felt like blowing up, but instead, you chose to pause, take a few deep breaths, and sleep on it before responding to the person who triggered you. Maybe you decided to listen to an uplifting song on your drive home so you didn’t bring your grumpy work mood home to your family.

Celebrating the things you are proud of in yourself as a daily practice EVERY SINGLE DAY is a great way to train your mind toward self-empowerment.

Don’t stop with two or three things! Most people can quickly come up with two or three things, but five is a stretch. This is purposeful. It’s designed to help you change the way you think about yourself.

As you become accustomed to this daily self-empowerment practice, you will build a new self-image, self-esteem, and self-confidence and break free of any self-limiting labels you have (consciously or unconsciously) given yourself.

So, instead of shoving yourself into the box of a label you gave yourself ten years ago based on a TV program that convinced you that’s who you are, create a new vision of yourself.

If a label doesn’t empower you, don’t take it on. Start finding the things that define you more positively and powerfully!
