Do you harbor a secret fantasy about becoming an entrepreneur? It could be that you have an entrepreneurial spirit– and you don’t have to start your own business to let that spirit shine.
Many of my clients are what I like to call ‘secret entrepreneurs.’
They possess an entrepreneurial spirit, but they are unfulfilled corporate employees who yearn for more satisfaction in their careers.
Do you resonate?
When clients come to me with this dilemma, one of the first things I do is take an ‘x-ray’ to see if they have the ‘entrepreneurial bone‘.
This is how I determine whether they possess the entrepreneurial spirit.
Having the entrepreneurial bone is not good or bad, but if you are thinking of starting a business, it’s beneficial to recognize whether you have it.
If you have a strong entrepreneurial spirit, you are happiest when you have creative freedom in your work.
You are not the kind of person who likes to work with specific instructions and protocols dictated by someone else.
You like to innovate, solve problems, and develop creative solutions.
Having the entrepreneurial bone doesn’t mean you have to hang out a shingle and start your own business to find satisfaction in your work.
You can satisfy that entrepreneurial spirit by working for a company that allows room for it to flourish and thrive.
Real estate is one type of work that allows those with the entrepreneurial bone to thrive.
Because even though real estate agents work for another company, they run their own business within the bigger company.
They are the ones calling the shots on how the business operates.
Sometimes it turns out that entrepreneurship is not a good fit.
There’s no need to feel guilt or shame if you determine that you don’t have the entrepreneurial bone.
But it is important to assess yourself beforehand because you could resent your business and be even more miserable than working for someone else in a corporate position if you don’t have the ideal mindset of an entrepreneur.
For instance, if you want to start a business primarily so you don’t have to report to a boss, you may want to dig a little deeper.
Not having a boss is the single worst reason for starting a business because you will usually become the worst boss you’ve ever had.
The bottom line is to know yourself and assess your motivations, i.e., determine whether you have the entrepreneurial bone, before deciding to become an entrepreneur.
