How To Get Self Motivated When You’re Feeling Stuck

Getting self motivated when you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed can be a challenge. In this audio clip, I’ll share an excellent tool to quickly get you on track and moving in the right direction.

Self empowerment can feel like a faraway thing when you’re sitting in front of a big project and not feeling self motivated to dive in.

Feeling stuck or overwhelmed is often the result of not having a project broken down into small enough steps.

This can easily lead to distraction and procrastination, and giving in to such temptations is the opposite of self empowerment.

There’s a simple tool I use with clients who are struggling to get self motivated.

It’s called the power of one and it can be used for many different scenarios.

The one that’s referred to in the power of one is the ONE next right thing you can do to get moving in the right direction.

Ask yourself what tiny action you can take right now.

Here are some examples:

You can use the power of one tool to take one action every day.

Or, if you have a deadline to meet, you can take one action in the morning and one in the evening, or every hour. The frequency will depend on the scope of the project.

So, how to decide what your one thing is going to be?

Here are two possibilities:

  1. You can do the thing that feels good to you. Starting with where you are most interested is a good way to build momentum.
  2. Another way is to start with what you know for sure. There are things you know for sure need to get done, and there are other things that may be optional or that just aren’t 100% necessary right now.

You can try both of these, of course. You don’t have to use one exclusively. Just see which one feels right in the moment, and feel free to interchange them.

The power of one tool is a great way to just get started, because sometimes that’s the hardest part.

You can also do micro movements if you need to break actions down to even smaller steps. The point is to get yourself moving, so break it down as much as you need to. Think bite-sized. And who knows? You may end up doing one more thing, and one more thing…
