Living with no regrets is ideal, but sometimes it can be challenging. Here I’ll share a simple tool for letting go of regret so you can move into new phases of your life.
I have had many clients with issues around letting go of regret.
No matter how much they would like to have the no regrets attitude, they continue to beat themselves up over things they wish had been different in the past.
Regret is a heavy emotion.
As I’m sure you realize, having regrets about the past can hold you back.
It’s like you’re carrying a big weight on your shoulders that keeps you from moving forward in the way you would like.
I have come to understand that regret usually stems from a feeling of not-enoughness.
Anytime a client comes to me with the weight of regret on their shoulders, it can be traced to some sort of lack.
They may be telling themselves they haven’t done enough or that they don’t have enough or that they aren’t good enough in some way, i.e., smart enough, talented enough, or patient enough.
When this is the case, my first order of business is to help them let go of regret.
Because before we can start with a fresh perspective and a new path, we must let go of what is weighing us down.
If you struggle with heavy regrets and not enoughness, there is something you can do to help yourself move forward with no regrets.
Make a list of all the things you feel badly about.
Here are some questions to ask yourself:
- What makes you feel as if you are not enough?
- What do you wish you had done differently?
- What do you beat yourself up for?
Even if it’s a small tinge, include it on the list.
It may help to take a few days to complete the list, as things will come to you at random times.
When you feel the list is complete, take some time to be quiet and alone for a bit with your list.
Read over the list, taking a moment to feel the depth of your disappointment for each item.
When you feel complete with the process of feeling it all, make a decision to let it go.
It’s like taking that heavy weight off of yourself so you can move forward with no regrets!
