Most people only think about external factors when mapping out their career strategy.

This is especially true when dissatisfaction or problems arise in their workplace or career.

They identify the problems as coming from factors outside themselves, such as:

External factors (like the ones listed above) only comprise about 20% of the problem in most cases.

I have reached this number anecdotally as I have helped clients identify relevant details of their current situation so they can map out an effective career strategy.

The other 80% of what makes people dissatisfied, unhappy, and frustrated in their careers is what I call the how.

It’s about what’s happening inside them, not all the external factors.

Here are some examples:

It’s easy to blame other people and circumstances.

While workplace challenges are real, we all have the ability to shift our level of satisfaction within ourselves.

Some people may need a different job, company, or role, but the number is smaller than you might expect.

I encourage my clients to start working on themselves first—it’s like upgrading their software.

This is important because most people develop work habits and patterns early in their careers and keep them for many years.

Taking the time to evaluate and adjust or shift these habits and patterns allows them to experience more inner peace and harmony.

It can also have a surprising positive effect on external factors.
