Self-management is always worth your time and effort. But it is especially important when you are experiencing emotional pain. Listen to this audio clip for some self care 101 around grief.
How are your self management skills around grief and emotional pain?
If you are on a self love journey, these are the times when compassionate self care habits can make a significant impact on how quickly you recover and heal.
What you resist persists.
When it comes to grief and emotional pain, this means that trying to shut down your emotions so you don’t have to feel the pain can actually end up prolonging the suffering.
Of course, in some ways it seems natural for us humans to avoid feeling pain, but it’s not the most efficient way to recover from loss.
If you have recently experienced a loss, or you find yourself in a state of emotional distress and suffering, the most compassionate thing you can do is to create a safe container where you can feel the pain.
Hold space for yourself in an open, kind, compassionate way.
Doing this will allow the emotion to be felt fully so it can then be let go.
This is much healthier than trying to suppress or shut it down.
Ironically, doing the latter will result in you having to feel the pain for a longer period of time.
In a nutshell, allow yourself to feel the feelings.
An important side note, however, is that there is a difference in feeling the feelings and letting your mind get away with you by making up negative stories about who you are and what this means about you.
If you’re in a state of grief, it’s not the time to allow your brain to build self-defeating thoughts around why this might be happening to you.
So, feel the feelings, but if you notice any negative storytelling inside your head, take a moment to redirect your thoughts.
These self management strategies are among the most valuable self care habits you can cultivate on the path of your self love journey.
